Parts of the station had recently been visited by cleaners and painters, and looked very smart.

An unknown loco with a freight on the up slow at the north end of the platforms.

1881Coaling shed rebuilt on a tapered floorplan. It sat between the two main sheds.18

1883-1893Midland Railway is quadrupled1
1890Midland Railway Act authorizes a branch line from Irchester Junction to Raunds. The line is built only as far as Higham Ferrers.1
1892Construction starts on the Higham Ferrers branch line.9

1 May 1894Higham Ferrers branch line opened to passengers. Service runs every 75 minutes.1

The iron work is nicely picked out in red and the roof panels restored to the ends of the supports. I have a number of published pictures from the 60s showing the iron-work in black and missing the last row of glazing. Does anyone know the history of the alterations to the colours, gable ends, and panels ?
